Sreema Mahila Samity has played a pivotal role in implementing Community based disaster plans in and around the Nadia district, West Bengal. In the domain of Disaster Risk Reduction, SMS provides several relief services along with the application of prevention strategies. SMS has conducted extensive research on climatic patterns and has also studied the requirements of the community. Currently SMS is working in Ranaghat 2, Hanskhali, Duttapulia, Shilberia, Kumari, Hazrakhali, Ramnagar, Panikhali, Mazida, Aishmali areas. Based on the collected data SMS has scaled up the project.
OBJECTIVES:
- To get the communities prepared against disaster (natural disasters like flood, cyclone,) and to reduce distress during and post-disaster conditions.
- To mitigate health hazards of community people specially women (emphasis on cardiovascular, gynecological, endocrinological, ophthalmological.
- To be aware and eradicate people of communicable diseases especially pandemic and epidemic diseases.
- Building capacity towards organized efforts.
- To reduce the vulnerabilities of the community particularly of women through preparedness.
- To increase community access to govt schemes and resources for natural disasters and other livelihood-related schemes (especially for agro-based and fishing communities).
- To institutionalize preparedness for DRR, climate change adaptation, and environmental protection both at community and PRI levels.
- To analyze the requirements of the community based on age and gender.
- To raise awareness on plastic pollution, cleanliness, and organic farming.
- To organize training, group meetings, and awareness talks on livelihood strengthening specially with women.
